Why the SOP Convention 2026 Was Time Well Spent

Matthew Pull January 23, 2026

Attending the Society of Photographers Convention 2026 was a timely reminder of why the photography industry continues to be such an exciting place to work. Over a packed few days, the convention brought together photographers at every stage of their careers, alongside brands, educators and industry leaders, all under one roof.

What stood out most was the openness. Conversations flowed easily, whether over a coffee between talks or while wandering the exhibition floor and there was a genuine willingness to share knowledge, mistakes and lessons learned. The programme struck a strong balance between creative inspiration and practical insight, with talks covering everything from storytelling and lighting to licensing, workflows and the realities of running a sustainable business.

The trade show itself was a highlight, offering hands-on time with new kit and software, as well as thoughtful discussions about where technology is heading and how it can support, rather than replace, creativity. Live demos and portfolio reviews added an extra layer of energy, making the experience feel active rather than passive.
